Back and Neck Pain

Throughout life a slight loss of movement of the joints in the body can interfere with a normal working healthy spine and nervous system. This can have a knock-on effect on the way your muscles and spine work together and often results in pain. Painkiller drugs only block the pain signal to the brain. I can identify and treat the underlying cause of the problem causing your problem, thus alliviating the pain.

Have you ever wondered why your back or neck pain re-occurs?

This is because your body is temporarily healing the problem, therefore reducing pain. However often the underlying dysfunction of within the spine and muscles may still be present, allowing the problem to be vulnerable and to flare up again and again. What I can do is assess how your back is working and correct the underlying problem that is causing the pain to reoccur.

Arthritis

Arthritis is also known as ‘wear and tear’ or osteoarthritis. Poor posture, truama and repetative stresses to joints can result in our joints wearing down. This degeneration of the joints, including the spine, is a slow process which can take years to develop without you knowing. General wear of the joints then causes your body to make extra areas of bone in an attempt to support the joints. You may feel little or no pain even if the wear and tear is quite advanced. However slight loss of the proper movement in the worn joint may result in local inflammation and nerve irritation causing you to experience pain. The degeneration within your joints cannot be reversed, but chiropractic care can improve the existing joint function and surrounding musculature.

Chiropractic can reduce muscle spasm around the joints, restore the joint’s natural movement patterns and enhance joint nutrition, improving mobility and pain by reducing inflammation around the joints, alleviating stiff and aching joints and  helping prolong the worsening of wear an tear.

Headaches

Headaches are a common everyday problem for many people. It can leave you feeling tired and fed up with continuous recurrent discomfort. Chiropractic can help headaches linked with problems from the the neck and back. Often loss of movement and restriction in the joints of the neck and upper back can create tension in the muscles and joints supporting the neck, shoulders and skull. When this occurs pain from these structures can radiate and travel appearing as pain in different parts of the head and face. Chiropractic can alleviate this pain by correcting the underlying dysfunction within the spine, leaving you feeling headache free.

Shoulder, arm and hand pain

Irritation of the nerves from the neck can result in pain that radiates into the shoulder and arm. It can be experienced as dull, burning or sharp shooting pain. To relieve this discomfort it is important to correct the cause from the source of the pain. Chiropractic care can identify the source of the pain and treat it appropriately.

Often pain may be coming from the shoulder, elbow or wrist joints. If the joints in the upper extremity are not functioning correctly, it can leave surrounding mucles weak and painful. Chiropractic is not only a specialist treatment for the spine but is also highly specialised in treating the joints of the arms and legs.

Sciatica

When pain is experienced in the the lower limb it is often termed as 'sicatica'. Sciatica is caused by pressure on the nerve root as it exits the spinal column, creating symptoms through the distribution of the nerve. Often the sciatica is caused by a disc bulge or 'slipped disc' compressing the nerve. With Chiropractic care I can help alleviate those symptoms onto the leg by correcting the spine to take the pressure off the affected nerve. It is also possible to experience pain in the groin, leg or thigh due to refered pain from muslces and joints within the spine, pelvis and associated muscles. These can also be aliviated through proper diagnosis of the cause and then chiropractic to correct the dysfunction.

Slipped disc

The intervertebral discs act as a shock absorber for the spine. They are formed by a tough fibrous outer layer with an inner 'gel like' centre. Technically the disc cannot slip out because they are firmly attached to the vertebra above and below. However the disc can bulge to varying degrees or the outer fibre can tear and result in the inner 'gel like' substance bulging out. The bulge may occur as a consequence of the change of alignment in the spine, creating pressure on the disc, therefore squeezing the disc so that it protrudes out of its normal position. When this occurs it can either irritate or pinch the nerve that is exiting the spinal column at that point.

Chiropractic can correct the spinal alignment that may be predisposing the disc to bulge. Correcting the alignment can then reduce the pressure that is causing the disc bulge. Once the mechanics are corrected the pain will reduce, owing to reduced pressure on the nerves and joints.

Trapped nerve

A completely trapped or pinched nerve is rare, however an irritated nerve is more common. This can occur from a disc bulge (see slipped disc), misalignment of the spine or bony changes around the nerve. Compression and irritation can result in pain, muscle weakness, pins and needles, numbness, burning sensations or throbbing pain. If the pinched nerve is in the back you will likely have these symptoms in the leg, if the pinched nerve is in the neck you may have the symptoms in the arm. I can help alleviate the pain and problem by correcting the spine to free up the pressure on the nerve and therefore reduce the pain.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a general term for a sideways curvature of the spine. It can be caused by postural changes that pressure the spine into curve, or it can be an 'idiopathic' scoliosis, meaning there is no apparent reason for the cause of the curve. Scoliosis can lead to pain and mobility problems and can cause further pain and discomfort to other areas like the shoulder or neck, or even breathing problems. Whether chiropractic care can treat scoliosis depends on each individual case. A consultation and full assessment would be needed to identify if your particular case can be treated. Often a full correction of the scoliosis may not be possible, however it is possible to improve the function of the spine and therefore reduce the discomfort that it is causing. It is also possible to treat and reduce pain and discomfort in areas that the scoliosis maybe affecting, for example neck and shoulder pain.

Sports Injuries

Through sport and exercise, no matter what level you may do, your body is prone to repetitive stress. This can lead to loss of the proper movement of the bones and joints within the spine, which can then cause problems throughout the normal working muscles and nerves. Repetition can lead to an acute or chronic injury including;

Hamstring, calf and achilles injuries
Groin or thigh strain
Tendonitis
Knee/ankle sprains or injuires
Shoulder/elbow problems
Lower back and neck injuries

As a chiropractor I am highly specialised in treating various sports injuires. I will not only consider the presenting injury, but also take into account the body mechanics and other areas that may have influenced that injury. Chiropractic can speed up recovery from injury and can improve performance by improving function, control, co-ordination and muscle strength. I can also asses and correct any areas of weakness of vulnerability within the muscluoskeletal system that may cause others problems, therefore helping you to prevent the chance of future injury.

Whiplash

Injuries to the neck caused by a sudden movement of the head, backward, forward, or sideways, is referred to as whiplash. Whether from a car accident, sports activity, or an accident at work, whiplash or other neck injuries warrant a thorough chiropractic check-up. Whiplash symptoms may not develop until 24-48 hours after the incident and can include neck pain, headache, pins and needles and/or numbness into the upper extremity. Shoulder pain, pain between the shoulder blades and often low back pain/stiffness can also occur.

Whiplash results when the head is suddenly jerked back and forth beyond its normal limits, over stressing the joints of the spine and their supporting muscles and ligaments. Chiropractic care can aid in restoring the normal joint movement and associated muscle action.

Pregnancy care

Enjoying your pregnancy is important to you and therefore is important to me as a chiropractor. Many physical and hormonal changes take place during pregnancy, which can put a strain on your body. Changes in posture, increased weight gain and the relaxing of pelvic ligaments during pregnancy can put more stress on the joints of the pelvis and spine, leading to lower and mid-back problems, as well as pelvic, rib and leg pain. Chiropractic care is suitable and safe throughout your pregnancy, using gentle techniques to help correct spinal and pelvic problems, allowing for a more comfortable pregnancy. I can also help to make the birth process as comfortable as possible for you and your baby by ensuring the alignment of the joints and ligaments of the pelvis are working correctly.

The birth process can be stressful and I can offer further care after pregnancy to help the your body recover and return to optimum functioning. Chiropractic is an excellent alternative and is drug free pain management option for you.

Treating Children

'Growing pains’ is a term quite often heard when children complain of aches and pains. Our bones and joints are very supple whilst growing and it is probably the most important time to help develop a healthy spine. Occassionally sports injuires and falls can produce long-term problems if they are not addressed early. Many people do not realise that chiropractic treatment can be of benefit to children. Gentle cranial and spinal adjustments or mobilisations to skull and spinal joints by the chiropractor can help treat children. More and more children are suffering from back pain because of increasing sedentary posture in front of computers and television or because they have to carry heavy bags to school. Catching problems early in these cases is important. I can give advice about posture and carring loads correctly which can then help prevent problems in the future.
